As a tool grinder the belt sander is almost ideal: Belt sanders cut very fast and very cool when you use the right belt and a wax stick lubricant. Average grinding time for a 3/8" HSS tool is under 4 minutes and less than 2 minutes for a ¼" HSS tool. With their wide flat platens they allow for simple tool alignment so facets are easy to avoid.
Jul 29, 2009· Your grinding plan looks exactly like what I did the first time I ground an HSS tool bit. I had the same source as you, the Sherline page on grinding tool bits. I was pleased at how well my tool worked on 1018 CRS. I used a bevel protractor to set the tilt on the rest to 7 degrees.
Jul 28, 2015· Yes I have a Baldor Carbide Grinder and it is a great machine..Good for carbide, perhaps over kill for HSS tool bits. Yes for the right price the Baldor beats all for HSS or carbide.IMHO.But grinding on the wheel OD is better for HSS. Carbide Grinders grind with the face.

Additionally, a properly ground High Speed Steel (HSS) tool often will give a better surface finish than a carbide tool. The essence of lathe tool grinding, as I think of it, is to undercut the tip of the tool to provide 'relief' so that the metal just below the cutting tip does not contact the work.

Dec 01, 2016· The tip geometry on a HSS tool is hard to visualize, let alone understand, and grinding them accurately is even more confusing. It's no surprise that so many hobby guys go to carbide tools, HSS insert tools or tangential tools – HSS tools can seem to take too much work.

Aug 02, 2018· Your next choice is to get a tool grinder set up with a radiusing facility. This can be done DIY with a bench grinder or you can build a more elaborate tool grinder. You would still be shaping HSS but wouold have more control over radius quality and size. Another choice is to learn how to make "form" tooling on the lathe from tool steel.
HSS is cheap like borscht, easy to grind, infinitely reusable, and takes thermal abuse like a champ. In a few minutes, you can make any custom special purpose tool you want. Grinding HSS tool bits is an area of machining that seems very intimidating.
Apr 16, 2009· I find that I currently prefer to "grind" HSS tools on my belt grinders. Easily swapped belts in a variety of grains and always flat, great where that works. I generally only resort to my grinder wheels for corner work or to use the 40 grit wheel for roughing the bit shape.
A chip breaker in a HSS tool is not diffucult to grind but getting a good finish on it may be a separate matter. The usual effort at home ground chip breaker is a groove ground with a corner of the wheel near the cutting edge. The grinding striations run parallel to the edge but the chip flow runs at right angles.
In the home shop "best" tool performance is hard to quantify because we generally don't repeat an operation long enough to wear a tool out, whereas tool life was a major concern for St. Clair. Tool life, in the form of infrequent sharpening, is important but ease of resharpening and initially grinding the tool …
